Septic tanks have one mission: to contain solid waste and allow liquid waste to drain into the septic leaching fields.
The septic tank sits in a large, protective concrete box, capable of holding 1000+ gallons of waste.
Your septic tank might be a round, metal tank, a concrete tank shaped like a coffin, or even a homemade tank made out of concrete blocks. It simply depends on how old your home is.
In the last few decades, plastic septic tanks arrived on the scene. Originally, plastic tanks were flimsy and easily broken. Now, plastic tanks are quite durable and engineered to last.
As long as your septic tank is not cracked or caved in, it will work properly.
Some can become clogged, and a simple filter replacement or snake run can fix minor problems.
What if your septic tank is cracked or caving in?
Other times septic tanks can become cracked, or even cave in. This can happen for a number of reasons.
For example, if your septic tank is run over by a heavy vehicle, (like an oil delivery truck, or even a pickup running over the back yard) or if a large object were placed or built over it, (shed, stone wall, etc,) sometimes this can create cracks and ultimately lead to a tank caving in.
If your septic tank has been cracked or caved in, generally a full tank replacement is needed. Depending on the direction given by the town, a plastic or concrete tank may be used to replace your current septic tank.
