Do you have an indoor swimming pool… That you didn’t plan on?
Maybe your basement floods every spring?
Or maybe your Septic System gets flooded with every big rain? Shortening the life of your system!
How can you solve the water problem?
With Water Problems Prevention is Key
Gutters and Leaders
The first (and easiest thing) step towards a dry home and backyard starts on your roof. Water caught by your rooftop needs to flow into properly installed, good gutters! These gutters should not empty right on your lawn, but rather need to be directed away from your house and septic area via leader pipes. This allows the water to travel away from your property.
Sloping & Grading
The roof isn’t the only source of water entering your home. Water runs downhill, and if your home is at the foot of even a gentle slope, water can be running right into… and then down inside your home. Creating the proper slopes and grading is an important step in shedding water away from the home. This is a simple but effective tool, that when combined with the appropriate gutters can be another great step in warding off potential problems.
Footing Drains & Sealing the Foundation
Connecticut requires all new homes to have footing drains installed. That said, some older homes never had drains in place, and even if they were installed, footing drains can get old, plug up, and fail. These need to be replaced.
If you notice water coming from the ground up inside your basement, this is a sign that your footing drains are no longer working.
When replacing footing drains, the walls need to be exposed to the footing, old drains removed, walls sealed with a waterproof sealant, and then new drains installed.
